Why Is Everyone Talking About Elon Musk?

Elon Musk is still in the news. Alternating the label of the visionary with that of an eccentric billionaire, the businessman who sent his car into space has been one of the most named celebrities in recent weeks due to the surprise and controversy surrounding the name of his son—originally baptized as X Æ A-12.

Finally, Musk and the  Canadian electronic music singer Grimes have had to make a few minor modifications and, in compliance with the laws of the state of California -which does not allow digits to be added to first names- the proud Dads have resorted to Roman numerals and entered their baby in the registry under the name  X Æ A-XII.

But, after the gift of fatherhood, the billionaire president of Tesla has returned to the news for the historic launch this Saturday of the rocket that can make another of his varied dreams come true: pave the way for commercial space travel.

A historic space launch

For the first time in almost a decade, NASA has launched a human-crewed mission from Cape Canaveral. And it is their first joint mission with a private company: the Falcon 9 spacecraft contains the Crew Dragon capsule,  designed by SpaceX to facilitate people’s travel through the solar system. The launch has been streamed on its website.

Space X is just one of the technological innovation companies founded by Elon Musk, co-founder of PayPal and president of the car company Tesla Motors, a pioneer in the development and implementation of electric cars. The truth is that  Musk has big plans for the future of humanity.

What is Elon Musk’s “vision” about?

At the birth of his son, he wore a T-shirt with the slogan “Occupy Mars” (Let’s occupy Mars), one of SpaceX’s slogans. But the expansion ideas of this tycoon are not limited to the space field but have covered several other fronts: he is the founder of the  SolarCity energy company, the  Hyperloop pressurized tube train company, which seeks to revolutionize high-speed transport speed, from The Boring Company, an excavation, and infrastructure company, and two artificial intelligence companies:  Neura link and OpenAI.

His ideas attract and frighten because they combine opposite presuppositions that anticipate diverse scenarios. An advocate of transparency and free access to ideas, he warns against the dangers of artificial intelligence, a technology he considers our “greatest existential threat.” However, he believes his omnipresence is impenetrable and the reason for another of his ambitious projects, the neurotechnological Neuralink, where he experiments with the integration of AI into people’s brain processes.

Likewise, it supports two utopian versions that it does not consider contradictory:  saving the earth through clean energy and its large-scale implementation  (Tesla has received, however, sanctions in Europe promoted by environmental groups during the construction of its first factory in the continent) and imagine a space future where humanity works and lives on Mars, something that he hopes to live “at some point in his life,” as he declared in an interview.

He is infamous for posting tweets that send his company shares crashing on the stock market, smoking marijuana on a live stream, and insulting a British Twitter user who made fun of his subs. He has been fined and reprimanded by big bodies, and he continues to change the infrastructure and ways the world as we know it works.

Why is everyone talking about Elon Musk? Because his daring and self-confidence are fascinating, we disagree on whether he will lead us to success or disaster.
